They’re uniformly shaped, stack cleanly, and seem easy to deal with — until you’ve filled a large box and discover it weighs 70 pounds and can’t be safely carried. Back injuries from heavy book boxes are extremely common. Here’s how to pack books correctly and safely for your Twin Cities move.

The Cardinal Rule: Small Boxes Only

Never pack books in large moving boxes. This is the single most important rule for safe book packing.

A standard large box (18x18x24 inches) completely filled with books weighs 80-100 pounds — far beyond safe carrying weight. Books always go in small boxes (16x12x12 inches) — properly filled, that’s 30-40 pounds, manageable and safe.

How to Pack Books for Maximum Protection

Stand books upright (spine down) in boxes when possible — this is the gentlest position for bindings.

Lay books flat when needed for smaller or more flexible volumes, alternating binding direction for weight distribution.

Fill every empty space with crumpled packing paper so books don’t shift during transport.

Protect Valuable or Rare Books

Wrap valuable or antique books individually in acid-free packing paper before boxing.

Mark any boxes containing rare or valuable books as ‘FRAGILE’ in addition to noting their weight.

Declutter Before Packing

Books are one of the best decluttering opportunities before a move. Go through your collection honestly before packing a single box.

Half Price Books locations purchase used books. Minneapolis Public Library accepts donations through their Friends of the Library program. Many neighborhood Little Free Libraries will take quality books.

Label All Book Boxes

Always label book boxes with the room they came from AND ‘HEAVY’ so movers know what they’re picking up. Unlabeled heavy boxes are a safety hazard.
